Focusing & Embodied Listening: How ADHD-ers Can Deepen Self-Trust

Why ADHD-ers Struggle with Self-Trust

Many of us have been conditioned to distrust our instincts - to override our gut feelings in favour of external rules, expectations, or productivity systems. The result? A deep disconnection from our inner knowing.

Instead of learning to pause and listen, we often:
🚫
Overthink decisions – constantly second-guessing ourselves.
🚫
Look for external validation – struggling to trust our own judgment.
🚫
Push past discomfort – instead of pausing to ask what it’s telling us.

But clarity isn’t something you force - it’s something that emerges when you create space to listen.

Focusing: Learning to Listen to Your Inner Compass

Focusing is the practice of tuning into the body’s signals - the subtle, intuitive feelings that tell you whether something feels right, wrong, stuck, or uncertain. It’s not about immediate answers - it’s about holding space for what wants to emerge.

🌀 Step 1: Pause & Notice – Instead of rushing to solve a problem, pause and ask: How does this feel in my body?

🌀 Step 2: Name the Felt Sense – Rather than analysing it, describe the feeling itself: Is it heavy? Tight? Expansive? Warm?

🌀 Step 3: Hold Space Without Judgment – Often, clarity comes not from thinking harder but from allowing a feeling to unfold.

🌀 Step 4: Trust What Arises – Instead of doubting your intuition, notice what shifts when you make space for your inner knowing.

Embodied Relating: Listening in Relationships

Focusing isn’t just for personal decision-making - it also transforms how we connect with others. Instead of reacting impulsively or feeling misunderstood, we can:

🌿 Pause before responding – allowing time for deeper listening.
🌿
Notice body signals in conversations – paying attention to what feels true rather than just words.
🌿
Honour our emotional rhythms – creating space for processing rather than rushing decisions.

For ADHD-ers who often struggle with impulsivity, emotional intensity, and communication challenges, learning to tune into the body’s wisdom can be profoundly grounding.
